Since starting Keto I have went almost one years without an attack, whereas before it was about every 3 to 4 months. I have eggs and Beef every morning. Sometimes I make a Keto breakfast casserole, with a can of Green Chili’s, 12 eggs, 2 cups of cheese, a container of Cottage Cheese, a bunch of Green Onions, a Red Bell Pepper, and 1lb of Hamburger. I am losing 2.5lbs a week and have went from 276lbs to 216lbs, my goal is 188lbs. When I was just eating Vegetable’s all the time I was getting gout attacks all the time. I have completely cut out Rice, Potatoes, Bread, and Pasta, all sugar and sweets. It was only when as a lifelong vegetarian that I started eating Beef, and Tuna, and Cod-liver and Codliver oil and some Sardines, and some Chicken that my lifelong skin issues cleared up. Soooo my question is, why do you always say to stay away from Beef or meat and yet in another month I will have gone a whole year without a gout attack after dropping the veggies pretty much and going meat eater? I have also read about other gout sufferers getting relief by going Keto so mine is not an isolated incident.

Whenever I have a gout attack I start taking 800mg of ibuprofen three times a day and soak the gout area (foot, or thumb) in hot water for a few minutes. I get some relief immediately using the hot water and the ibuprofen reduces the swelling. The key to my way of thinking for doing this is because the gout attack is from Uric acid “crystals”. Crystals have sharp points and the hot water melts the crystals. I don’t do any special diets before, during, or after an attack. Works for me so I hope this can help others.

Nicotine patches seem to help as well as buying a packet of sour cherries and consuming a large handful each day. I have observed the consumption of carbon C 60 (fullerene) in olive oil also seems to reduce the chance of attack considerably. The nicotine patch observation is based on the literature that the incidence of gout among smokers is much lower than in the general public.

My husband got his first gout attack after a 7 mile walk and on a vacation eating really healthy foods, but yes, a glass of wine with dinners.

We were traveling and he thought he had a stress fracture. He did not change his diet or suspect gout until it was constantly getting worse for 10 days. The photos of his foot are worse than anything I’ve seen on the Internet.

At home, he regularly drinks apple cider vinegar and water and takes antibiotics, But did not do the Apple cider vinegar on the road.

Soaking his foot in Epsom salts increased his pain, but maybe that was good. He is taking Tumeric, cherry juice, tart cherry extract, chanca piedra and eating celery. He just started a celery seed supplement, and it is going away extremely slowly.

I am allergic to dried beans, lentils, chickpeas etc., so we do not have any in the house. I am not sure I can even be around the steam they produce while cooking them. He has not tried the bicarbonate of soda, but his blood pressure has been high with the attack. Any thoughts on probiotics or anything we have not thought of? Is olive oil OK?

At least he is walking again, but his big toe is still very stiff and he could not fit in most of his shoes.

      • Spiro Koulouris

Yes olive oil is absolutely fine. Probiotics as well. Just keep at it, drink lots of water, take his supplements, avoid meat.

      • Peter Tai

I have tried many natural remedies over fifteen years. While some of these remedies help, the one thing that has helped keep gout at bay is potassium citrate which alkalizes urine enabling more uric acid to be removed from the body.

    • WILL HUGHES

      Hi
Is it possible to monitor my uric acid levels at home?

      • Spiro Koulouris

        Hi Will!

Yes there are a few uric acid meters in the market if you go a Google search but they are not as accurate as a blood test. Best if you go take a blood test twice a year to measure uric acid levels in order to keep them in check in my opinion.

        • Vic Cherikoff

There is not a lot of point in monitoring uric acid sporadically as any fructose in the diet from fruits eg mango, melons, dates and other dried fruits or from added sucrose on processed foods and condiments will boost uric acid levels. The biochemistry is that the energy carrier called ATP donates a few phosphates in the reaction of fructose to fructose-1-phosphate in the liver. The AMP formed readily turned to uric acid which has many negative reactions in the body even for non-gout sufferers (eg high BP, low nitric oxide, urate crystals in organs and more).

My point is that you could measure a normal blood uric acid level one day and the next it could be way high if beforehand you have a bad sugar hit from cakes, desserts, soft drinks, the fruits I list above.

I had suffered from Gout for over 20 years. At one stage I was having 2 attacks per week. Cherry juice is a great anti-inflammatory.
I was doing some research on other gout treatment and was lead to the following book – “Candida: Killing So Sweetly”. I followed the treatment using Gum Turpentine. After a few weeks the attacks slowed down and now after 3 years I am Gout free, I can even drink beer again!

    • Arpad Schummer

To get rid of gout, stop eating grains which cause uric acid buildup and inflammation. Take Magnesium, you’re probably deficient. Dissolve it in your mouth for 15 minutes so it’s absorbed directly into the bloodstream, so it won’t cause diarrhea.

Could you please clarify the language you use in your article. Acidity and Alkalinity are not the same thing.

Getting the details is important as a friend of mine killed himself when his kids convinced him that drinking hydrogen peroxide would help cure his diabetes. Didn’t dilute it properly. Hospital was not able to reverse his blood pH. He was probably already brain dead when they put him on a flight for life to get him to a hospital with a hyperbaric chamber for treatment and he was declared dead mid-flight.

“Alkalinity is the capacity of water to resist changes in pH that would make the water more acidic.[1] (It should not be confused with basicity which is an absolute measurement on the pH scale.)” -Wikipedia

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alkalinity

      • Roger

Your friend drank hydrogen peroxide? Either that’s a myth, or your friend was straight up dumb. It’s famously an acid, the corrosive kind. Only a moron would drink this without researching it.

Your nonsense about ‘didn’t dilute it enough’ and ‘reversing his blood Ph’ is meaningless nonsense.

Drinking hydrogen peroxide wouldn’t kill you from making your body too acidic. That’s ridiculous. It’s a fatal, corrosive acid.

        Please, learn some basic science.

        • Ron

Hydrogen is not an acid specifically. As per Wikipedia: “Because of its instability, hydrogen peroxide is typically stored with a stabilizer in a weakly acidic solution. Hydrogen peroxide is found in biological systems including the human body.”

It is recommended for oral debriding, but should not be ingested in large amounts.

Thank you for all the great information and comments. My father has severe gout and get gout attacks every few weeks now. He maintains a very simple diet. He also has prostrate cancer and high blood pressure. I was wondering if baking soda in water is still ok for him to take or not since it wasnt recommended if you have high blood pressure. Also I would appreciate if anyone can suggest anything to take or avoid in diet for his gout…given his condition (cancer, high bp and slightly high cholesterol) Thank you so much!

      • Spiro Koulouris

It’s not something I can give advice on since he is suffering from prostate cancer and high blood pressure, plus gout. Best to leave this to his doctors and follow their advice. I know for prostate cancer, a food that is good is tomato sauce. Read this article. As for gout, continue eating a diet high in complex carbohydrates like fresh vegetables, legumes, beans, 100% whole grain breads, pastas and rice. Do not fry or stir-fry. Baked or boiled only. Avoid all meats for now. Go strictly vegetarian.

        Good luck!

        • Jerry

I have been using ACV capsules twice per day for the last few weeks and, yesterday started having a gout pain for the first time. Am I using too much or should I stop taking it. Thanks for your help.

          • Spiro Koulouris

You can keep taking it but go check it, you need to know how high your uric acid levels are and seek your doctor’s advice for best results. If natural remedies don’t work, then that is the next step.

        • Ismail Kasana

Tomato sauce for prostate cancer? NOT AT ALL bro.
It’s fresh tomatoes because of their lycopene content that may help otherwise enlarged prostate or prostate cancer victims should avoid testosterone increasing foods or drugs as they promote condition. My husband, brother AND father get horrible gout attacks every year around the holidays (turkey, ham, prime rib, gravy, beer – all the bad stuff). Dried cherries plus diet cran-pineapple juice shorten their formerly week long misery to a few days! And you HAVE TO STAY OFF YOUR FEET!!!

    • Arsalan Rauf

Thanks for sharing this informative article about natural remedies for gout, it is very helpful.

    • James Rich

Had no idea antibiotics could cause a gout attack. I reduced my sugar intake, changed my diet and consume blueberries and dark cherries everyday. Hadn’t have an attack for over a year. Antibiotics changed that! Glad I found this web site. Thank you!

    • Jorel

I’m glad to be part of this group! Had an attack before Christmas…took Predisone and it worked wonders! But silly me wanted to test beer since I was feeling good…so I drank half a bottle then BOOM, pain in my midfoot the next day…been achy for the past week now. I really don’t want to take steroids again and Advil seems to not do much…Is it time to ask the Doctor for maybe prescription NSAIDs to help?

      • Spiro Koulouris

        Hi Jorel!

Advil just removes the edge off the pain for a few hours so you can manage to walk a bit more easier. Regardless, your doctor will check you out and let you know which option is the best to treat your painful inflammation. There is also colchicine that gets rid of the pain and inflammation the fastest.

    • Jake Castillo

I’m 31 years old and I’m suffering from very painful gout attack. Is omega3 & drinking apple cider help remove the uric crystal? How about drinking coffee 2x a day it is safe? I’m experiencing on and off pain. Need your advise.

      Thank you

    • Dean

I have been a gout sufferer off and on for many years. It usually lasts a couple days and goes away as fast as it comes on. Mostly ankles and knees. Sometimes it travels around. I also suffer from GERD. I manage the gerd with baking soda daily. I also take tumeric daily. Those alone do not seem to prevent attacks. It seems shellfish and organ meat are the primary culprits. The last couple years I have had what I would call a severe attack twice and one of those times is now. I wont take the pharma. Sounds like I need to pay attention to diet.

    • Lance Mellon

      Hello!

I think I have gout (for about the 3rd time). I have heard that beans are something that should be avoided but I see you saying here that a “vegetarian diet with beans a mostly vegetarian diet eating fresh vegetables, whole grain breads, pastas and rices along with nuts and beans”
I like beans and wonder if I should cut them out? Also what about cereal with soymilk? I eat a lot of that as well.

      Thanks for your advice

      • Spiro Koulouris

        Hi Lance!

Yes usually bean recipes that get people in trouble are the ones that includes meat in it. Then beans get all the blame. So if you eat beans without meat, it is an excellent source of protein and will not cause a gout attack. Your metabolizes bean protein way differently than meat protein, so kidneys don’t have to work as hard to break it down. I eat beans all the time from lentil soup to chick peas with wild rice and will always include it in my gout diet.Even famous gout research Dr. Choi will tell you the same thing and it’s all backed up by research.

    • Amber H Fuller

Very interesting article. I would think it not wise to soak in hot/warm warm water. Doesn’t heat make inflammation worse? I am suffering my first time with a severe case of gout.Thank you for the interesting article.

      • Spiro Koulouris

        Hi Amber!

Heat helps melt the uric acid crystals, it doesn’t feel as good as cold while you are doing it but afterwards your affected joint does feel better compared to applying cold water or ice.

    • jeff

I’ve enjoyed reading some of your suggestions. I am now soaking my foot in an Epsom salt bucket while applying a tumeric paste to my index finger. Question: Would it make sense to also add the vinegar to the bucket,or will they somehow cancel each other out?

      • Spiro Koulouris

Epsom salt alone should do its’ thing and relax the muscles of your foot, lessening the pain and swelling. I’d suggest you test the vinegar remedy on its’ own and not mix it and see which one you prefer.

Has anyone tried the Gout Care Herbal Mixed products? Did it help or not? I suffered gout attacks regularly and found that shrimp, alcohol and red meat caused flares – ALSO EVERY TIME A FLARE WOULD COME IT WOULD FEEL AS IF I ALSO HAD A UTI – started taking cranberry extract and have barely had a flare since! I take 1 or 2 pills each day and it controls it

    • Gloria

      Hi Everyone,

I find magnesium chloride, topically applied really helps. I have a big genetic component to the gout wit pyroluria and MTHFR gene dysfunction. I’ve always been vegetarian and a non drinker since infancy, so it ain’t that!

If you can keep a small lemon or lime tree and take the juice, along with keeping up your magnesium levels that will help. Also see if you can have your zinc levels checked – no-one ever mentions that!
      Good luck, everyone…

A gout flare every month is or should be unacceptable. You could be doing some long term damage to your joints. Additional dietary improvement may be needed, or perhaps long term allopurinol prescription as well.

    • Edward

I have a quick question. I am recovering from a very recent suspected gout attack (Uric Acid of 7.4). Can I apply heat (hot tub) to my foot?

      • Spiro Koulouris

Yes heat works better than cold in the sense that it helps melt uric acid crystals but cold works better for removing the pain and swelling from the inflammation of the affected joint.

I have pretty much found the most effective gout treatment so far…
Go and donate blood… do it regularly…
Uric acid and other toxins build up in your blood… So throw away 16th of it with each donation… you can safely donate every 3 months. Think of your body like an aquarium, no matter how good the filter is, you still have to do a water change regularly to get rid of the stuff your filter(kidneys) don’t… I’ve found it can bring relief for a gout attack within 24 to 36 hours… and prevents further attacks as long as you donate regularly… I was even able to eat a bit more meat and not worry…

    • Vera

      Hi!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Gout is a family ailment. My dad was bedridden because of it, my siblings are suffering from it, too. My 26-year-ol son is suffering his second gout attack. The first one was last year.

I was wondering why pinto beans are recommended for gout sufferrers. Don’t pinto beans and lentils fall under the same category as white kidney beans? Whenever one eats Favada (a spanish cuisine with white kidney beans), gout attacks.

I’m sharing your post on my FB page – Healing Earth PH

      • Spiro Koulouris

        Hi Vera!

The reason beans get a bad rap is because people add other foods along with it, to make it taste better. Right? Ever had a bowl of chili with beef and beans? It’s not the beans that is the culprit there, it’s the beef! So how are you eating those beans should be the question. Beans are beans. It doesn’t matter if they are pinto, black, red or white. They have the very similar properties and nutrients.

Favada from what I see includes diced ham and pork in the recipe. Remove the ham and pork and believe me, your family will not suffer from any other gout attacks.

Potassium!! I can’t believe all the stuff online and nobody mentions POTASSIUM. That’s why cherry juice or Smart Water work. Doctors treat gout with something called K-Lite, which is just a fizzy tablet of potassium. But you can just get a potassium supplement at a health food store. Note: Do NOT take a whole bunch of K at once, because it can stop your heart.

Cherries are always liked, either sweet or sour. These contain anthocyanins, antioxident properties which can reduce inflammation as well as minimize gout flare-ups. Thanks for sharing such valuable healthy life tips.

He is damaging his joints every day this persists. Go to a doctor NOW and get colchicine and indomethacin.

Then, of course, also elevate the feet and soak in Epsom salt, eat cherries and bananas, take a quercetin and bromelaine supplement, drink more water, have no meat or fish during the attack and only very small portions therafter, etc.

I am going to finally have my blood and urine tested to find out my base Uric acid level when not suffering a gout attack. Should have done so years ago. Hope your son gets tested too.

      Spiro,

Thank you, thank you for this site. Similar to you, I have been fighting gout attacks for almost 15 years now. I’ve tried all the normal treatments/prescription drugs. I changed my diet dropping shellfish, asparagus and anything else identified as a high purine food. I did everything the first 12 years but: 1> commit to taking a daily prescription & 2> quit drinking beer. Finally after all else failed leading to basically a permanent gout invasion of my body (ankles, elbow, thumb, toe), I gave up beer 3 years ago. It seemed to work! No attacks other than one day after a strenuous backpacking trip, I drank a single beer. 1 day later, attack comes thus causing my permanent decision to stop drinking beer. So no beer, no shellfish, no asparagus and big cutback on other meats seemed to be the trick.

Until this past weekend. Started feeling that little twinge in my left ankle Friday. By Saturday afternoon, I was on crutches. Sunday was just as bad, truly the worst attack in quite a while. Like always, I started thinking about everything I had eaten or drank in the past week, nothing stood out.

So here I am laid up in my bedroom with crutches next to the bed, totally frustrated but with a positive outlook on the next step in this ongoing battle against high uric acid. I found your website and already perused through many of the articles. I have yet to succumb to big Pharma as I continue to believe this affliction can be addressed through dietary/lifestyle changes. Information on this site is extensive, far better than anything else I have found. I look forward to yet again altering my diet and probably adding some of the natural supplements reviewed here.

      Thanks Spiro!

Hi, Sprio. Just came across your site and thought I would throw in what has helped me in the past to relieve the pain from gout. I usually get gout in my thumbs or big toes. This last time around I got it in my ankle. Thought I had a fracture of some sort. The ER doc recommended allopurinol, which I took for 3 days only to have the pain move from my ankle to my big toe. Stopped taking allopurinol and went back to what has helped in the past. Put hot water in the tub and soaked my foot for 10 minutes. I could immediately start to move my toes (not very much, but better than before the hot water). I then take 800 mg of Ibuprofen 3 times a day to reduce the swelling. You can’t the 2400 mg for very days, especially if you’re on blood thinners like me, but this regimen works for me and I just wanted to share this. I do the hot water thing about 3 times a day, also. 2nd day almost all pain is gone and then trying to get back to normal walking. Hope this helps some of your followers.

      Hi Spiro,

I purchased your ebook and have found it very useful so far… thank you.

I’m 36 years old and I’ve had gout for about 10 years. It has progressively been getting worse and the time between attacks shorter. The time between my last two attacks was 3 weeks. I take colchicine for relief.

I have regularly been taking tart cherry tablets. I have also been off the shellfish and alcohol for over a year now. In the last month, I’ve been following your advice reasonably closely, with some chicken.

I also had blood tests done last week and all my bodily functions were good (except urate was at the high end). I also do not have thalassemia or anemia.

My doctor wants me to start taking allopurinol. I have been resisting this for years, but now I feel I have no choice but to take a low dosage of it on an ongoing basis.

Do you have any advice for me? I’m at my wits end.

      Thanks!

Tell your doctor if you can experiment one last time by going on a vegetarian diet and drinking only water and tea and see how your uric acid level compares then. Give it at least a month or 2. Take the dietary supplements since they are supposed to supplement your gout diet and do help you. On top of that I would also take supplements that help your kidneys and liver which process and expel uric acid, so Milk Thistle, Celery Seeds, Chanca Piedra to name a few.

After that if that doesnt work then taking allopurinol may be your only choice if you want to avoid painful gout attacks in the future.

Thank you for your questions Marcus and good luck!

      Hello,

Gout is one of the problems I have which I need to try and control, the other problems are high blood pressure and kidney problems, high triglycerides, It seems no matter what takes care of one problem it will cause the other problems to get out of control.

I don’t want to take the prescribed gout medicine because of the side affects. Is there anything that is safe to take that would not interfere with other medical issues. I am on blood pressure medicine and sleeping pills and inflammation pills.

I can’t eat one type of food good for gout that does not interfere with my kidneys or high blood pressure.

      Please help!

      Thank you!

        Hi Tim!

Very hard to give advice since I don’t know your personal situation, I would do what your doctor tells you to since it seems you have an advanced gout problem. If you can stick to a mostly vegetarian diet eating fresh vegetables, whole grain breads, pastas and rices along with nuts and beans, you will do better since these foods don’t aggravate your gout or affect your kidneys. And only drink water if I were you and teas.

A disciplined diet can go a long way in helping with your health.

Thank you for all the great information on your site. I suffer with lots of pain, my father is no longer with us.My brother and myself are gout patients.I just turned 70 but I have still some good years ahead. Question? All these fruit and vegetables; can I just combine together in a blender and drink daily? And also do other things and treatments all at the same time?

      • Spiro Koulouris

        Hi Bertha!

Better to eat your veggies cause when you add them in the blender you’re eating mostly the sugar and not the fiber which is very important for your health and gout. You can do many natural home remedies at the same time if you like, that is not a problem, if that is what you mean.

    • Vinny

hi Spiro, great website and info…i usually combine 2 or 3 home remedies whenever i get a gout attack. every one is different,so you just have to experiment which combinations work. i also use any combination everyday to help avoid getting an attack or flare up…i also buy organic tart cherry juice or organic black cherry juice. they both work..

I find that drinking high alkaline water ( so called smart water) by Glaceau helps tremendously is staving off a Gout attack. Its expensive compared to std bottle water but well worth it considering the alternative. Im looking into a machine that produces high alkaline water, but they seem shrouded in scams and false claims?

      • P

It may help for gout as the very definition is too much uric acid, but yes, alkaline water is scammy and overwrought with false science.

Just wanted to say thank you for taking your time to impart your knowledge. Has been very helpful for me. Thank you.
