What kind of condiments can I use? mustard/relish/ketchup/salad dressing/mayonaise?
You can use all of them, just don’t go over the suggested 25 grams of sugar consumption daily. Lots of sugar intake is known to increase uric acid.
My husband has been in bed for 3 weeks with gout. Is it possible that apples could have been the culprit?
Hi Lisa!
No. Apples are not considered a gout trigger.
I have just been diagnosed as having gout. The pain is absolutely excruciating, nothing like I have ever had before. Breaking a leg was a dream compared to this. I was wondering if anybody knows how long it takes for the pain to diminish after taking anti-inflammatories from my doctor. At the moment I have my foot in a bucket of water, it eases the pain for a while.
It could take anywhere from 2-3 days to 2 weeks. Depends on the severity. For most, 1 week is the average. First time attacks can be brutal and last 2 weeks. Keep your feet elevated as much as you can. Either walk with a cane or crutches.
Thank you for replying to me. Breaking my leg was a dream compared to this. One joint eases minutely and another starts. I am using crutches, but can hardly move with the pain. I have been drinking water but have no appetite at all. Thanx again.
I would like to know do you have a gout diet diet plan I can follow?
Yes if you read all my articles and read my book, you will notice that the key in a gout diet is to eat 80% of your daily calories as complex carbohydrates life fresh vegetables, legumes, 100% whole grain breads, 100% whole grain pastas & rice, beans and some fruit. 10% of your daily calories should be protein as in meat and fish. Final 10% if your daily calories should be fat as in milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, eggs etc…
It’s what I call the 80-10-10 Diet.
Hi,
I am a chronic patient of gout for over ten years now. Recently, I had a gout attack, and after two weeks of the ongoing treatment my foot is still bad, and I am unable to wear shoes. This is the first time in my life that the gout is not getting normal over two weeks. I was prescribed colchicine and later changed to allopurinol. After one week, when my condition was not better doctor increased allopurinol to the high dose.
During these two weeks, I did not drink alcohol, did not eat any meat, and did not consume any sugary drinks or food. I have been drinking just water to flush uric acid crystals. My daily food includes green beans, broccoli, eggplant, brown rice, cucumber, carrots, cherries, oranges, and apples.
I would appreciate if you provide me any tips to lower my uric acid level. My doctor wants me to have one more week rest. This is the third week I am going to be off from work. I have bills to pay. Please help.
Avoid all meat, sugar (sugary foods and beverages), processed foods and meats, alcohol until you feel better.
Eat 90% of your daily calories as fresh vegetables, legumes, beans for protein instead of meat, 100% whole grain breads, pastas and rice. Do not fry and do not stir fry. Eat these foods either baked or boiled.
Then 10% of your daily calories can be fat like eggs, greek yogurt, milk, cheese, butter, nuts etc…
Drink only water, herbal teas and coffee. Try and drink 12 glasses of water a day. You should feel better in a few days.
Good luck!
Spiro,
Thank you very much. I am now 95% better after 17 days. I can wear shoes and walk properly. Your articles were very nice and interesting; they contain lots of vital information. Great work!!!

Hi evidently I’ve had gout for over 10 years and didn’t know it. Was missed diagnosed for years.. I can’t find an answer to this question anywhere so I’ll ask you OK? Can you get tophi under your nails finger and toenails I do have the chalky stuff under all my nails and around my cuticles, I also have the Lil yellowish pimple looking things on my skin.? I try my best to clean under and around my nails..why is this happening and what is the best way to clean my skin..try Betsy
Hi Betsy!
Not necessarily, the chalky stuff is probably a fungal nail infection and you need to check it out with your doctor so it doesn’t worsen. I’ve had fungus on my toe nails and treated it with a topical application prescribed by my podiatrist. Look into it. Try and avoid the medication since you have to do a blood-test beforehand to see if you liver is healthy enough to take those heavy duty pills. The topical treatment will take longer but at least you won’t affect your liver but again if your doctor advises against it depending on your severity, you have no choice.
when i buy veggies i buy
red skin potatoes
jap pumpkins
carrots
broccoli
is the potatoes and pumpkins i buy ok, or is there other types i should buy
thanks
andrew
Hi Andrew!
Yeah potatoes and pumpkins are in the complex carbs category and you can eat up to 80% of your daily calories.
i would also like to know, i have broccoli every night with carrots, potatoes, and pumpkin, is it safe to eat broccoli,
i notice i cant eat cauliflower, peas or beans, green whole baby beans is this the beans that is bad for gout .
is Brussels sprouts safe safe for gout
is corn safe for gout, such as corn cobs
Hi ANdrew!
If you read my book you’ll notice that I recommend that gout sufferers eat 80% of their daily calories as complex carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grain breads and pastas, whole grain rices etc… so cauliflower, brocolo, peas, beans, brussel sprouts and corn won’t cause you a gout attack and eat these foods every day if you can. Plant based foods burn clean and you don’t stress your liver and kidneys much, it’s when you eat processed foods, too much meat, alcohol, sugary foods that harm your liver and kidneys cause they have to work overtime to break it down and that gets you in trouble with gout.
