Health Benefits Of Honey In A Gout Diet

Honey has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine and is also a key ingredient in over 600 remedies in ancient Hindu vedic texts, even the ancient Egyptians expounded the medicinal properties of honey containing honey in almost all of their remedies. It was also given as a gift in the Bible.

Honey is a strong anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal and is highly nutritious, you can call it a natural multi-vitamin since it contains B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, C, magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium, zinc, iron, sulphur and phosphate. It is one of the most healing substances on planet earth!

These health benefits of honey can only be found in raw honey which is unpasteurized cause if the honey has been pasteurized (heat processed) killing off the beneficial components in the honey, so make sure to read the label carefully. As a general rule of thumb, the darker the honey, the healthier it’ll be for you. A lot of the pasteurized honey also has the pollen removed. So buy only raw honey and locally from a farmer if you can.

Tart Cherry Extract for Gout

Raw honey is the best natural sweetener to use for the gout sufferer which stands at an average glycemic index of 30-40, putting it on the low end of the glycemic range. Most commercial pasteurized honeys in the market usually score between 55-80 on the index which is very high. Of course if you eat large quantities of anything sweet, you may cause your blood sugar to rise, so only consume it in moderation please. Honey is not a high purine food, so eating it in small amounts may not trigger any gout attacks but if you are going to choose a sweetener to sweeten your oatmeal during breakfast or your afternoon tea, raw honey should be the choice for the gout sufferer.

Many people who suffer from gout and arthritis use different concoctions with either cinnamon and honey or apple cider vinegar and honey mixed in hot water that may help treat symptoms of gout and arthritis. One must drink this on a regular basis to see any results.

A study from Copenhagen University treated their arthritis patients with a concoction of one tablespoon of raw honey and half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder, right before breakfast found that after a week, out of 200 patients, 73 were relieved of their symptoms, walking without pain after a month. Cinnamon and honey mixed together is also promoted by Ayurvedic medicine. This remedy can also be used topically to the painful area and massaged into the skin.

Avoid sugar and other artificial sweeteners and if you have a sweet tooth, a little raw honey may do wonders in a gout diet.
